RYFA 7v7 Rules

Teams

Coaches 

  • 2 coaches per team

  • One offensive coach is allowed on the field and in the huddle with players, but must be a minimum of 5 yards behind quarterback before ball is snapped so there is no interference with game play or Referee

  • Defensive coaches are not allowed on the field at any time.

  • Coaches are responsible for knowing all rules and educating their players on the rules and conduct.

  • Abolutely no arguing with refs or other coaches.  First offense is 3 point penalty awarded to opposing team.  Second offense is removal from the game.

SCORING 

  • 7 Points for a touchdown 

  • PAT is optional from 10 yard line.  If successful team would receive 1 point for a total of 8 points for TD.  However if unsuccessful team gets six points instead of 7.

  • 3 Points for interception 

  • 7 Points for interception return For TD (return past 40 yard line). Note:  3 points for interception are not added to the 7 if returned for TD.  Same PAT rules apply. 

  • 0 points for turnover on PAT.  Dead ball

  • Official scores kept by refs

GAME TIME

  • 2 – 25 minute halves with running clock until the last minute of each half when clock will stop for incompletions, change of possession, out of bounds etc (standard football rules).

  • 1 time out (45 seconds) in second half  only.

  • Overtime:  Coin flip at start.  Winner decides to start offense or defense.  No scrambles.  No blitzing.  No timeouts.  Each team get’s 1 possession (3 plays) from 15 yard line to score.  Teams that score are required to go for 2.  If teams are still tied at the end of the first OT the game will result in tie.  

GAME PLAY 

  • Field length will be 50 yards, with a 40-yard start point. 

  • 40+ yards in width. 10-yard deep End Zone. 

  • 40, 25 & 10 are the first down lines. .  Teams get 3 plays to get a first down (no 4th downs).  If a team does not get a first down or score, it is a turnover and the other team gets the ball at the 40 yard line.

  • The Quarterback is allowed 4.0 seconds to throw the ball. Time starts on the snap of the ball and stops on the Quarterbacks release. If the release is under 4.0 seconds the play continues or if the release is after 4.0 seconds the play is blown dead.  The refs must not slow down their count to give the QB more time.  The ball needs to be out at 4.0 seconds.

  • Defensive player may chuck an eligible receiver in front of him. The defender is allowed to maintain continuous and unbroken contact within the five-yard zone.  Defensive player may not shove offensive player to the ground.  If ref determines excessive force was used it will result in a 5 yard penalty and an automatic first down for the offense.

  • Offense is not allowed to shove a defensive player to create separation. 

  • The center will be responsible for setting the ball at line of scrimmage. The center is not an eligible receiver. 

  • All offensive formations must be legal sets and respect the tackle box (3 yards). Two receivers on the line other receivers off the line. 

  • Offense is encouraged to run the ball as many times as they want on any down to keep the defense honest. 

  • Offense is allowed to make one exchange (pass, handoff, toss) after snap. No toss passes,reverses, or hook and ladders (trick plays are not allowed). 

  • Defensive players cannot cross the line of scrimmage until the ball is handed off. If a defender crosses the line before the ball is handed off, this would be considered a blitz. 

  • Teams get 2 blitzes per half. 

  • QB’s are allowed to “scramble” or run 2 plays per half.  QB must be across the LOS by the 4 second count from the ref. QB must cross the line of scrimmage for it to count as a scramble.   

  • No Kicking or Punting. 

  • Blocking – Players are allowed to “set picks” with hands at their sides, or simply get in between their teammate and the defender to interfere with the defender once the offense has completed it’s exchange (pass, handoff, pitch etc) but not before.   

  •  Receiver/Ball carrier is legally down when touched below the neck with one or two hands (one finger = one hand). (Excessive force or shoving will not be allowed and will be penalized with automatic first down and 5 yards. A player can be ejected from the game if ruled unsportsmanlike or flagrant) 

  • Fumbles are dead balls at the spot with the last team retaining possession. A Fumbled snap is not a dead ball, but the 4 second clock remains in effect. 

  • There are no 4th downs. Offense has 3 plays to gain 15 yards or required yardage for a 1st down. 3 downs in all zones

  • 7/8th grade league will use “youth” size football

PENALTIES OFFENSE: 

  • Off-sides = Loss of Down 

  • Delay of Game = Loss of Down 

  • Offense will have 25 seconds to snap the ball once it has been marked for play and blown live. 

  • Offensive Pass Interference = 5-yard penalty and Loss of Down. Receivers cannot shove defenders to create space 

  • No penalty may be assessed in excess of the 40-yard line. If a penalty would move the offense beyond the 40- yard line, the offensive team will only be charged with loss of down. 

  • If the referee sees the clock has exceeded 4.0 seconds the play will be blown dead and the ball will be returned to the original line of scrimmage with loss of down. 

  • Offensive team is responsible for retrieving the ball to the previous spot or the new line of scrimmage spot. Clock does not stop and any delay by the offense in retrieving and returning the ball to the Referee will result in a delay of game and a 5-yard penalty. 

  • Illegal formation – 5-yard penalty 

  •  The center must take a knee after the snap of the ball. Snapping the ball between the legs is encouraged but not required.

DEFENSE 

  • Off-sides = 5-yard penalty 

  • Defensive Holding = 5-yardpenalty 

  • Defensive Pass Interference will be a spot foul (1st down at the spot foul occurred) If Defensive Pass Interference occurs in the End Zone it will result in a 1st down at the 1-yard line.

  • Any dead ball penalty on the defense that occurs after a change of possession will result in a loss of down for that team’s offense when they begin their ensuing possession

  • Responsibility to avoid contact is with the defense. The defense is allowed initial disruption and then must cover. Excessive or prolonged contact will result in a “tack on” penalty at the end of the play. 

  • Excessive force (shoving players to the ground) while chucking/jamming the WR at the line will result in a 5 yard penalty on the defense and an automatic first down for the offense. 

CONDUCT 

  • All coaches and players are expected to conduct themselves in a positive manner and refrain from unsportsmanlike actions. 

  • Verbal abuse and/or threats will result in immediate removal from event and season suspension.  

  • No taunting or foul language 

  • Mandatory that you instruct your team to clean up their items after each game (personal property, water bottles, wrappers, garbage etc

  • Weapons, drugs, alcohol, smoking, vaping and chewing tobacco products are PROHIBITED at all events.
